Lyon Arboretum — Mānoa

Only a few miles from Waikiki, Lyon Arboretum feels worlds away from the city.

Operated by the University of Hawaiʻi, the nearly 200-acre botanical garden contains thousands of tropical and subtropical plant varieties and miles of trails through upper Mānoa Valley. It's also an active research and plant-conservation facility—not simply somewhere created for tourists.

If you're searching for non touristy things to do in Oahu, this is an excellent alternative to another crowded lookout. Check current opening information before visiting because operational closures can occur.

Kapaʻeleʻele Trail — Kahana

This short trail inside Ahupuaʻa ʻO Kahana State Park offers something many Oʻahu hikes don't: scenery and cultural context.

The roughly 1.2-mile route overlooks Kahana Bay and passes the Kapaʻeleʻele Koʻa fishing shrine and Keaniani lookout. Nearby Huilua Fishpond represents another connection to traditional Hawaiian resource management.

Heʻeia State Park — Kāneʻohe Bay

Heʻeia State Park tends to receive far less attention than Oʻahu's headline attractions.

The coastal park overlooks Kāneʻohe Bay and Heʻeia Fishpond and offers a quieter opportunity to appreciate the relationship between land, ocean and Hawaiian aquaculture traditions.

The best unique places in Oahu aren't necessarily secret. Sometimes they're simply places most visitors drive past.
